For Better or For Horror?

Hello! thanks for keeping up with my blog posts coming out every Monday. After having a week without posting, I wanted to focus on the outside perspective. I want to discuss today how horror movies don't just satisfy you for the here and now, but for the future too!

Today's post will be diving into how horror movies can be useful for many personal problems that can arise in the future. You may not know many of the effects on your body and brain and how horror movies shape them, but I will be of reassurance today.

When watching horror movies, or generally any movie, you may not think of the after effect because it's only a 90 minute movie. How much of an effect can movies really have on me?

That question is exactly why I wanted to find out more about how horror movies(and eventually other genres) have short-term and long-term effects on our bodies.

When watching horror movies specifically, I have previously discussed the effect it has on you while watching. I haven't discussed the effect it has on you after watching.

Horror movies can be great for overcoming current fears or worries that you have by helping you gain confidence over scary matters. What about when it comes to problems that arise later, when you might not be watching them as often (which I hope never really happens lol)?

Horror Movies and the Future

What is it about horror movies that gives such an effect on how we handle situations?

  1. It makes you more aware & expecting;

Horror movies are about expecting the unexpected. Horror movies generally have a protagonist who faces a dilemma or situation where in order to get through it(survive), they have to be courageous and face their fears.

Similar to action movies, the use of this protagonist has a positive effect on the viewer. It can make the viewer want to emulate that character when they feel afraid in life.

Also, because many horror movies show real-life traumatic situations, like Split and Panic Room, it can be helpful to know what to do in that situation.

2. It helps with bonding & intimacy

It might sound crazy to relate horror movies to bonding and intimacy, but think of when you were younger. When you had a nightmare who were the first people you would go to? When scared, we tend to go to loved one's (parents,spouses,friends) for comfort.

This connection can be similarly shared through bonding over both people's fears while watching horror movies. It builds this connection that is created by making it to the end of the movie.

It's also a sense of accomplishment you both achieved by facing your fears, but also facing them together.

A fun way to test out your horror movie knowledge with your friends can be some trivia questions!

This is a good example of bonding over the shared hobby of watching horror movies.
